Vodafone Arena renovation plans, 2018
Vodafone Arena in Laucala Bay, Suva will be closed down for a year to pave the way the for renovation. Chief executive officer of Fiji Sports Council Litiana Loabuka said that the arena would be upgraded to an international standard level facility. It will be a central attraction for sports and significant events upon completion. Latiana expressed her excitement towards this project that will bring good tidings at Fiji Sports Council.
FMF Gymnasium which also undergoing renovation is set to be re-opened in a grand event to be held this January while the arena is being upgraded. The FMF Gymnasium contains a new roof, an impressive sound system, and floor and council headquarters offices.
Latiana revealed that though it took some time, she is pleased with the projects’ actualization following the Fiji Sports Council guidelines for five-year capital works project strategic plan. The arena and gymnasium have survived lousy weather seasons over the past years and hosted significant sports events among them Oceania Sports Championships, high –end corporate functions and other International events.
The Vodafone Arena which is yet to be closed down for renovation is a significant capital project for 2018 according to the government infrastructure development plan. Fiji Sports Council has confirmed that the World Championship International Weight-lifting Federation 2019 will be hosted at the arena upon its completion. The council is also optimistic about the possibility to host the 2022 World Youth Netball Championship.
